Economists, Experts to Warn “Dangerous” Conrad Budget Commission Could Harm Social Security, Medicare, and Hurt Economic Recovery
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — On the eve of President Obama’s Thursday White House summit on jobs, the Campaign for America’s Future will hold a news conference call with reporters to urge the White House and Congress to follow the leadership of the AFL-CIO’s five-point jobs planto combat the growing joblessness that continues to plague the struggling U.S. economy. The plan was first unveiled two weeks ago at a forum that featured many of the progressive and minority organizations that will be represented at this week’s summit.
Speakers on the call will also issue a call to oppose the “Budget Commission” proposed by senators Kent Conrad and Judd Gregg. They will release a statement signed by more than 30 major organizations (see note to editors) warning that such a commission could propose cutting public investments as well as Social Security and Medicare benefits. It could then override the normal legislative process, replacing it with expedited procedures prohibiting amendments and limiting debate
