Aging pets need geriatric checkups

Dear Readers: Did you know that excess weight on an older pet can be extremely dangerous to the animal’s health, just like a human? As pets age, their metabolism starts to slow down, and they usually aren’t as active as they were when they were younger.
Don’t drastically change your pet’s diet, especially when it is older, without input from your veterinarian. A sudden change in diet can cause problems for many dogs and cats. Exercise is important, too. Try to make a habit of taking your pet for a walk every day or having some playtime so your pet “gets moving.” Just like us, pets may experience many of the “old age” ailments like arthritis or joint problems, especially if they are overweight
